The Thread Project

Concept & interior design by Zacha A.

HACKNEY WICK is an area located between London Borough of Hackney and London Borough of Tower of Hamlets in East London. It includes a great number of industrial buildings being transformed into artistic studios contributing to the redevelopment and the upgrade of the area’s profile along with 2012 Olympic facilities located there. All these parameters synthesize its individual character and empower the area to become a vibrant and growing place for arts and creativity.

The Site

The proposed site is 119m2 in size and it is a common two storey British brickwork structure. The building is located near Hackney Wick Overground station on the corner of the junction with Hepscott Road and White Post Lane. Since 1995 remains an abandoned and locked but also remarkable site due to the particular graffiti that covers it through these years. The lord Napier building was a historic factory worker’s pub by the 1980’s. The pub closed in 1995 and the building remains empty until now. My proposed plan was to create a space that is attached to the area’s profile and enhances its creative character. The building will become a cloth up-cycling workshop space that will help people to recreate their old and disused clothes. The proposed plan will carry forward and enhance the notions of teamwork, collaboration, imagination, and creativity. It will also influence people to avoid consumerism and become an inspiration for new and more sustainable ideas in the fashion design industry.

Design Concept

The design of the space it is based on a continous line, which defines the whole areas starting from the upper and finishing on the ground level. That line represents the continuity of garment’s life through the age. The principal concept lies on a thread that creates a complete garment. According to the last, I tried with one line, to define an entire space. The feeling of an open space will help the interior to be naturally lit and avoid wasting energy. It will also give the idea that there are no restrictions, no borders in the space. Everything could be moved, change position and be recycled, relating to the ideas of innovative and broad-minded people.
