The Void
Concept & interior design by Zacha A.
Inspiration
In this particular project the subject was to develop a design proposal for a performing arts cultural venue by using a particular space of the London College of Communication building in South London.
The inspiration behind the concept comes from Thom Yorke’s spasmodic movements on the video clip of the song Ingenue. By tracing the movements I could see interesting shapes unfolding on my paper that could be transformed into a space. A specific shape that looked like a void inspired me to move forward with the design concept.
Design Concept
The void is a glazed structure and holds the key element on the plan that divides the public from the private spaces. On the ground floor it functions as a corridor that leads to the private spaces, while on the first floor it becomes a transparent partition wall that separates the auditorium from the stage.
The viewer can watch a performance through this big glass wall since nowadays people are more familiar to the idea of observing things through a screen.
The amphitheatric shape of the auditorium follows the ancient greek way of watching performances. The absence of the seats activates the communication, sociability and interaction between the people. On the contrary the void and its glazed wall that functions as a big screen, reflects the introverted side of the modern spectator that stems from the constant use of monitors as a common way of interaction and entertainment. That creates an irony in the space.
